Civil War Sites
Historic Washington State Park
Located northwest of Hope at intersection of US 278 and Route 195
Visitors here walk streets that never have been paved past a rare collection of restored 19th-century buildings staffed by docents in period dress. The park interprets Arkansas history since the town’s founding in 1824 and includes an interesting Civil War history.
The town served as the Confederate capital of the state after Little Rock was occupied by Union troops. The government used the now restored 1836 courthouse as its primary building until the war’s end.
Begin self-guided tours at the visitor center at the “new” 1874 Hempstead County Courthouse. Park open 8 am–5 pm daily. Adult tours $8.
