    With more than a century of acquisition and conservation, this oldest chartered Civil War institution houses a very large collection of unique artifacts including portraits; Union regimental flags; the preserved head of Gen. George Meade’s much-wounded horse “Old Baldy” and other Meade items; Jefferson Davis’s dressing gown; and much more. Open Thursday–Saturday 11 am–4:30 pm. $5/adult.

Laurel Hill Cemetery

   Established in 1835, this historic cemetery is a who’s-who of Philadelphia families. Forty Civil War generals including George Meade are buried here. Cemetery maps and an inexpensive guidebook are available at the cemetery office.
    Open Monday–Friday 8 am–4:30 pm; weekends 9:30 am–5 pm. Free.

   A blood-stained 36-star flag believed to have cushioned Abraham Lincoln’s head shortly after he was shot at Ford’s Theatre is featured here. Other Civil War items and a description of the flag’s history also are on exhibit.
   Open April–June and September–November 1–4 pm Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
  Open July and August 1–4 pm Wednesday–Sunday. $5/adult.
