Sesquicentennial
The 150th Anniversary
of the Civil War
Plans for commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War are underway. States and localities are developing projects and commemorative programs. Actually, some sesquicentennial events are already behind us with Kansas recognizing “Bleeding Kansas” at many of its historic sites.
The unofficial but widely recognized kickoff to the 150th anniversaries will be the commemoration in 2009 of John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry (now West Virginia). A multi-state group has been organized to recognize the event.
This webpage is Civil War Traveler's effort to keep up with the websites created for the 150th anniversaries.
Above is the front page of our printed Civil War Traveler for 2009, featuring "John Brown, 150 Years After the Raid," by Dennis Frye. The text is available here.
Of course, we will list all related events in CivilWarTraveler.com/events and let you know about other programs in our monthly e-newsletter (subscribe, if you haven't already).
